New central city park
Creating a greener, more resilient central city
Construction of the new park is set to start in August 2026. It’s the first park to be built by the Council in the city since 2006, when Waitangi Park opened. Located on the corner of Taranaki Street and Frederick Street, the new park will sit alongside the historic Chinese Mission Hall and Te Kī a Alasdair, a community housing apartment block.
The park will celebrate the former use of this area – both as the historic kāinga and cultivation lands of Te Aro Pā – and what was the original Chinese Quarter in Wellington from the 1870s. The park will continue to uphold its role in bringing together communities, and as a place of belonging, with acknowledgement of the layered histories tied to this whenua.
By celebrating our cultural heritage and fostering a sense of unity, we aim to create an inviting green space where people can gather, relax, and enjoy time together.
