Te Ngākau
Civic Precinct

In progress

Te Ngākau Civic Precinct is the civic and cultural heart of the city, and the gateway to the waterfront. Many buildings in the precinct were damaged during the 2013 and 2016 earthquakes, leading to a period of strengthening and redevelopment.

Te Matapihi ki te Ao Nui Central Library and the plaza area of Te Ngākau Civic Square have now reopened – safe, well-designed and re-energised.

Work on other spaces is progressing, including completing Te Whare Whakarauika Wellington Town Hall and constructing its new front-of-house annex, and refurbishing the City to Sea Bridge. Work is also underway towards activating the site of the former Municipal Office and Civic Administration buildings, while Precinct Properties plan and design a new building for this area. The Council will also be building a permanent small park on the corner of Victoria and Wakefield Streets.

From early 2027, when redevelopment in the area is complete, Te Ngākau will once again fulfil its potential as Pōneke’s vibrant heart.
