Te Whare Whakarauika
Wellington Town Hall
Te Whare Whakarauika Wellington Town Hall is receiving a major upgrade and extensive strengthening work. When redevelopment is complete, this beloved Category 1 heritage listed building will look similar, but will have modern, improved services beneath the surface.
The new Town Hall will be a world-class musical and recording venue, a base for civic and community events and part of a centre of musical excellence for the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra (NZSO) and Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington’s New Zealand School of Music—Te Kōkī.
Since being deemed earthquake prone in 2013, the Town Hall has been closed to the public. We’ve been reconstructing and redeveloping the building since 2019, to make it resilient and meet current earthquake standards.
A new, modern front-of-house annex – which will host the venue’s bars and toilets - is under construction. Te Whare Whakarauika Wellington Town Hall will reopen in February 2027.
