The Golden Mile
Courtenay Place
In 2025 we competed the first stage of the Golden Mile, with an upgrade to the far end of Courteny Place. The broader project is now on pause while a review is underway.
The Golden Mile, Wellington’s main retail and commercial strip, runs from the Parliament end of Lambton Quay, along Willis and Manners Streets, to the entertainment hub of Courtenay Place.
In 2025 we completed an upgrade the intersection of Courtenay Place and Cambridge/Kent Terraces. A new two-way bike lane was completed, kōwhai are thriving and the new pedestrian crossing will be activated later this year.
Late last year the project was paused so an independent review of costs and risks could be completed. This review will take around six months to complete and will consider whether the existing project remains viable and aligned with its original objectives. It will also include economic analysis on both the short and long-term impacts of the project across the full route from Lambton Quay to Courtenay Place.
