The Green Network
Creating a greener, more resilient central city

The Green Network Plan focuses on growing the central city’s network of trees, green spaces and planting. It addresses the current lack of planting in central Pōneke to support people’s health and wellbeing, deliver economic benefits, build climate resilience and improve biodiversity.

Building a green network requires planning and investment because the inner city is dense, compact and largely dominated by buildings, asphalt and paved areas. Underground infrastructure – including water, energy and communications systems – also limits where and what kinds of greening can be done.

As we gradually plant more trees and green spaces, the central city’s green network will become interconnected, well-distributed, and made up of a diverse range of plants – maximising the benefits it delivers.
